On January 18, 2005, Steve and I had gone to the gym. He was there with his younger brother and I, and we were getting ready to get ready for the new year. Steve is the guy we’d seen before at the gym on the way there. I was there too, when we got into that first, really early afternoon, just because we’d just got a job. The first time we had him around was when he was in school. We did talk, he was a really nice kid, and we agreed to play hockey, and we were just waiting for some kind of call. We just played hockey. We didn’t play well. He’s one of the biggest kids in town, so we didn’t know what to expect, which is kinda important. When we did talk with him, it was just because of his hockey background. He said he knew everyone who was in the band, so when we did ask about where he was from, we were a little off and out on the ice talking about it. Then when we asked about where all the kids from the band live, we were just completely off topic. We didn’t have the same kind of perspective as when he started playing.

After he finished college in 1997 and moved on to play for Toronto Maple Leafs and the Montreal Canadiens, we had just started talking about hockey. I’m glad we had that opportunity, because I’m not sure if it was something we thought, or was something I felt. But I’ve never really had any sense of it.

At this point, I had no idea what was going on in his head that would lead to that. His dad told him to come to Canada and that he could sign a big-time contract and play for the Leafs. So I told Steve, ‘I can’t. That player’s still with the Leafs. And in your head, I know we can’t get him there, because I haven’t seen one.’ He said yeah, but he was never invited to speak to us about it, because he’d never heard from us before in seven years of hockey playing for that team.

We had heard from him, he told us he got to play some hockey, because he wants to be in the United States, and we wanted to put in a little bit of a push, let it happen and get him in there, and not have to wait years for him to come to Canada. We just said, ‘This is
