According to the DOJ’s report, NBA players arrested in other jurisdictions face criminal prosecution if they appear in court and the criminal record of those arrested is not considered reasonable. Since the DOJ report came out on Nov. 18, the NBA has been in discussions with the NFL and its lawyers about a draft draft pick. They have agreed to release that draft pick to all owners, including the NFL and its owners, if the league provides a meaningful amount of money to them. The NFL has been the first company with an incentive system in place to take advantage of an increase in players’ salary caps.
The NBA did not respond to an ongoing request for comment. A representative for the NBA declined to comment further.
A report from The Washington Post indicates that the NFL and the NBA may be looking to reduce their free agent pool, though they are currently in the process of evaluating an alternative plan. For example, the Journal reports, NFL general manager Dave Gettleman and NBA coach Brett Brown said they are considering changing the minimum salary for free agents in order to allow players the flexibility to continue their careers while remaining above the league’s current salary cap.
