What are these different dances and how do I learn them
You may think that for all the attention paid to the controversial Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage here in the U.S., the majority opinion that struck down Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act had some meaning. But the majority’s opinion actually was pretty straightforward, and it struck down two broad, deeply flawed issues.
First, the court ruled that the right to vote depends upon whether you’re a citizen of another state. In other words, you can’t legally obtain citizenship. Moreover, the Supreme Court only overturned the Voting Rights Act when it decided that the government didn’t have the power to deny citizenship to people of that state simply because they are born outside the boundaries of a state.
Second, Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act required states to comply with the president’s directives if they wanted to do so.
So the ruling really set off a big firestorm.
In one of their most bizarre, perhaps most bizarre rulings, the majority struck down the Voting Rights Act, citing the preconceived federal power to deny citizenship to people on both the federal and state level. It also struck down the Fourteenth Amendment guarantee that citizens of the people can vote, as did Section 4, the very section that Obama created for states to recreate the electoral college.
